Koi Information

There are 14 color varieties typically recognized throughout most of the world. Nevertheless, there are over 100 color patterns. Not all of these breed true. The recognized varieties grouped into the non-metallic and the metallic koi.

Non-metallic Koi Varieties

Kohaku White with red markings	Taisho Sanke White with red and black	Showa sanshoku Black with red and white	Bekko White, red, or yellow with black markings
Utsurimono Black with red, white, or yellow marks	Asagi Pale blue with red belly and fins	Shusui Asagi with doitsu scales	Koromono White with red markings overlaid with a darker pattern
Tancho White koi with red on head and none on body, can have black on body	Kawarimono Any non-metallic koi that does not fit into another category

Metallic Koi Varieties

Kinginrin

Means golden silvery scales. Usually a kohaku, sanke, or showa color pattern. There are pearl ginrin with a solid sparkling area in center of thickened scales. Or there is flat scaled versions: beta-gin (whole scale shimmers), diamond ginrin (sparkles all over), and kado-gin (scale edges only shine).

Hikarimono (Ogon)
Single Colored

Hikari-utsurimono
Black with red, white, or yellow markings or with white and red markings

Hikarimoyo-mono
Any metallic koi that does not fit into another category
